HARRISONBURG, Va. - George Mason used a 9-1 run across a chaotic final 26 seconds on Wednesday night to hand James Madison a tough, 76-72 loss in non-conference men's basketball action at the JMU Convocation Center. The loss drops the Dukes to 2-6, while Mason is now 4-3.
Junior guard
Stuckey Mosley continued his scoring ways in the loss, racking up 28 points on 11-of-18 shooting, including a white-hot 6-of-9 from three. The junior added a trio of rebounds, two assists and two steals across 34 minutes.
Junior forward
Develle Phillips had his best game at JMU, notching his second double-double in three games with 15 points and 11 boards, adding four blocks and three assists across 34 turnover-free minutes. Freshman guard
Matt Lewis chipped in 13 points, four rebounds, three assists and a steal off the bench.
The Dukes led by four with less than 10 second left, when Mason hit a three as JMU was whistled for a foul under the basket. After the Patriots hit the free throws to take a 72-71 lead, the Dukes were called for an offensive foul prior to the inbound pass, allowing Mason to hit two more free throws and ice the game at the line.
For the game, JMU continued to disrupt on defense, forcing Mason into 16 turnovers on the evening and racking up steals. The Dukes shot 44.3 percent (27-of-61) from the field and hit 10 of their 12 free throws, the fourth-highest percentage of the last two seasons.
