CLEVELAND, Ohio – Just days ahead of the national semifinals, James Madison redshirt senior defensive lineman Andrew Ankrah earned his second All-America honor of the week, as the Division I Football Championship Subdivision Athletics Directors Association announced the 2017 FCS ADA All-America Team on Thursday.
Ankrah, who has already been named an Associated Press All-American, is a top-three finalist for the STATS FCS Buck Buchanan Award.
A three-time First Team All-CAA selection, the Gaithersburg, Md., native was voted Colonial Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Year and Touchdown Club of Richmond Division I Defensive Lineman of the Year after helping JMU to one of its best defensive seasons on record.
The Dukes lead the country in scoring defense (10.3), interceptions (25) and pass efficiency defense (82.27). They rank in the top-10 in 15 statistical categories, which includes second in takeaways (33), third in total defense (242.3), sixth in rushing defense (84.8), sacks (3.31), turnover margin (1.23) and defensive touchdowns (4) and ninth in passing defense (157.5).
This season, he has tallied 51 total tackles (28 solo), to go with 14.5 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and a defensive touchdown.
The fifth annual award recognizes the top student-athletes from FCS institutions at 11 different positions. The 2017 class includes student-athletes from 11 different schools, representing six conferences. Ankrah was the lone Colonial Athletic Association player to be honored on the FCS ADA All-America Team. Of the 11 honorees, nine participated in the 2017 NCAA FCS playoffs.
A national Offensive Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year will be announced at a later date and will be recognized at the NCAA Division I National Championship game in Frisco, Texas, on Jan. 6, 2018 in an on-field presentation.
The top-seeded Dukes face No. 5 South Dakota State in the FCS semifinals on Saturday, Dec. 16 at 4:30 p.m. The game will be broadcasted nationally on ESPNU and can be heard on the JMU/Sprint Broadcast Network.
