HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison Head Coach Mike Houstonannounced the 2017 football recruiting class on Wednesday, as 25 student-athletes have signed National Letters of Intent to play for the national-champion Dukes next fall.
Houston welcomed a class consisting of 10 offensive players, 11 defensive players, two specialists and a pair of athletes who could play on either side of the ball.
A total of 11 student-athletes hail from the Commonwealth of Virginia. Five signees come from North Carolina, three are from Maryland and two from New Jersey. The Dukes also signed one newcomer each from Georgia, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Australia.
A total of nine student-athletes will compete in the front seven on defense, with three players each coming to play defensive line, linebacker and the hybrid "kat" position. Four future Dukes are wide receivers, followed by three tight ends. JMU also received multiple commitments at running back, cornerback, safety and the offensive line. JMU also signed two state players of the year who will occupy the quarterback and athlete positions.
JMU also gained a quarterback and an athlete who both were named state players of the year.
Three student-athletes are already enrolled at JMU in freshman defensive lineman Marcus Hawkins(Morganton, N.C.), redshirt sophomore linebacker Gus Little (Maryland) and junior running back Marcus Marshall(Georgia Tech). The trio will participate in spring drills, while the remaining 22 signees will join the program this summer.
The class is comprised of 16 all-state honorees, two state players of the year, six conference players of the year and nine student-athletes who won at least one state championship while in high school.
The 2017 JMU football season begins Saturday, Sept. 2 when the Dukes travel to Greenville, N.C., to face East Carolina. JMU will host six home games, including four conference games against teams that finished in second through fifth place in the Colonial Athletic Association standings a year ago.
