TOWSON, Md. - James Madison slashed a 17-point second-half Towson lead to just five on Saturday evening, but the Tigers held on and scored their last 11 points at the free throw line to hand the Dukes a physical, 75-65 loss in Colonial Athletic Association action at SECU Arena.
The Dukes (8-21, 6-10 CAA) played well on the offensive end, going 24-of-52 (46.2 percent) from the floor, but yielded a 19-4 run to close the first half that turned a 22-18 JMU lead into a 37-26 advantage for the Tigers (19-10, 11-5 CAA).
Senior forward
Paulius Satkus posted his first career double-double for the Dukes, going 5-of-10 from the field en route to 13 points and 10 rebounds, four of which came on the offensive end. Senior forward
Dimitrije Cabarkapa joined him in double figures with 14 points that included a trio of three-pointers.
Towson pushed its halftime advantage to 17 in short order, scoring the first six points after the break to take a 43-26 lead, one it would match twice more, with the final time coming at 57-40 at the 9:42 mark. Junior
Ramone Snowden responded immediately, however, coming up with a three-point play that keyed a furious 14-2 run for the Dukes, who cut things to 59-54 with 5:51 to play.
That would be the closest JMU would get, though, as the Tigers scored five straight points across the next minute to push the advantage back to double-digits, and the Dukes would not get closer than eight the rest of the way as Towson closed the contest out at the charity stripe.
Mike Morsell paced the Tigers on the evening with a game-high 19 points, including 15 in the first half on 5-of-6 shooting, while Zane Martin added 16 off the bench and William Adala Moto chipped in 11 points and eight boards despite a 3-of-11 night from the floor.
QUOTING COACH ROWE
"Again, I'm so proud of the battle these guys had tonight. We absolutely can't have the rough stretch that we did against a team as strong as Towson, but these guys fought back and never went away in a tough environment."
