Harlow, Dukes Sweep Coppin State in Doubleheader
3/10/2017 8:26:00 PM | Baseball
With their second and third wins in a row, the Dukes improved to 11-3 on the season while the Eagles fell to 1-10 on the year. This is JMU's best start since the 2011 team went 11-3 on the way to winning the Colonial Athletic Association championship.
In the second game of the day, left-handed pitcher Colton Harlow (1-1) struck out a career-high 15 batters and did not walk a single batter for a complete game win. Harlow struck out the side twice, including throwing a perfect nine-pitch, three-strikeout inning in the sixth.
The Dukes' bats exploded for six home runs on the day, led by junior left fielder Jack Hamner, who hit a homer in both games. Hamner hit the first pitch of the bottom of the first inning over the right field fence to give the Dukes an early 1-0 lead in the second game. JMU later got home runs from Kyle McPherson, Brett Johnson and Ryan Coale.
In the first game of the day, redshirt junior Josh Wyatt opened up a 6-0 lead in the second inning of the first game by hitting an opposite-field, three-run homer. The Dukes had gone ahead in the first inning on a Zach Tondi RBI hit-by-pitch and a Bradley McKay RBI walk. JMU scored in every inning of the game, which was shortened due to a mercy rule.
Redshirt senior Brandon Withers (3-0) earned the win on the mound for JMU in the first game after striking out five batters in five innings. Joshua Hancock (0-1) and Quinn Gleed (1-2) took the losses for the Eagles.

TOP DOGS
Junior second baseman Kyle McPherson led JMU at the plate on Friday, going 5-for-7 across both games with two walks, three runs and an RBI. Junior catcher Ryan Coale tallied three hits, all for extra bases (two doubles and one home run), three runs and three RBIs while also catching all nine innings in game two. Redshirt senior first baseman Brett Johnson had a 4-for-7 day while collecting two runs and three RBIs.
HURLIN' HARLOW
Colton Harlow's 15 strikeouts over doubled his previous career high of seven, which came against Hofstra on May 20, 2016, and came within one of the all-time JMU record of 16 shared by Adam Wynegar (1999) and Dennis Meade (1975). Harlow is also the first JMU pitcher to throw a nine-inning complete game since Aaron Hoover beat Towson on April 25, 2015.
QUOTING COACH IKENBERRY
"Kyle McPherson had a huge day for us today, it seemed like he was on base all day long. I was proud of the way our guys played. I thought Brandon Withers pitched pretty well even though he didn't have the most command of his stuff, but I was proud of the way he competed. In game two, I was really proud of Colton Harlow pitching a complete game. He was electric today with no walks and 15 strikeouts, he had great stuff all day long. Brett Johnson came through with a big at-bat to put things out of reach, and it was good to get Fox Semones an inning on the mound. Overall, I'm just proud of how the guys played all day."
