HARRISONBURG, Va. – Liberty jumped out to a 26-1 lead through three and a half innings en route to a run-rule shortened decision over James Madison in a non-conference baseball contest on Tuesday afternoon at Eagle Field at Veterans Memorial Park.

Liberty (20-11) plated 10 runs in the second and 14 in the fourth as part of its early damage against JMU (17-14). Flames starter Jackson Bertsch kept JMU at bay with one unearned run allowed in five innings to pick up the victory.

Tucker McCoy took the loss for the Dukes in his first start of the season. Cam Vassar was the most effective arm for the Dukes with five strikeouts and no walks in 3 2/3 innings.

Left fielder Ky Parrott had the lone RBI for James Madison with a single in the second. Catcher Zach Tondi accounted for JMU's only extra-base hit with a double.

Seven batters had multiple hits for the Flames, led by center fielder D.J. Artis going 3-for-5 with four RBIs and three runs. Trey McDyre and Jake Barbee also had three hits.

"Sometimes in baseball this happens where you just get hit. I was really proud of Cam Vassar for coming in and pitching 3 2/3 when we were down. He commanded the zone with five strikeouts and no walks, which was great to see from a freshman. We pitched some guys early in the game who haven't pitched a lot. But a great part about baseball is that we get to come back out here tomorrow."

JMU will return home Wednesday evening for a 6 p.m. contest against Richmond.
