HARRISONBURG, Va. - James Madison used 17 hits and an 11-run third inning to roll to a 16-0 win over Longwood in a seven-inning, non-conference baseball matchup on Wednesday evening at Eagle Field at Veterans Memorial Park.
Â
The Dukes, who improved to 19-21 in the win, snapped a seven-game losing streak and racked up their most runs and hits in a single game since a 19-hit, 20-run performance against NJIT on March 17. Longwood dropped to 13-26 in the loss.
Â
Junior catcher Zach Tondi led the offensive barrage, going 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles, scoring three runs while driving in another. The performance marked Tondi's first three-hit game since he went 4-for-5 against UNC Asheville on Feb. 25.
Â
Freshman Fox Semones added three hits of his own, including two RBIs and two runs, while juniors Kyle McPherson, Adam Sisk, Bradley McKay and Mike Sciorra all tallied a pair of hits each. McPherson and Sisk hit back-to-back home runs in the 11-run third inning, while Sciorra notched the Dukes' only triple of the evening just before McPherson's homer.
Â
Five JMU pitchers combined to shut out the Lancers, with sophomore Christian Bourne opening the contest with 2 1/3 scoreless innings to pick up his first win of the season. Colton Harlow, Brandon Withers and Matt Colonall saw time in the win, while senior Michael Evans struck out two in a perfect seventh to close things out.
Â
McKay and McPherson opened the scoring with RBI singles in the second, but the majority of the Dukes' damage came in the 11-run third inning. In all, JMU sent 15 hitters to the plate, using six extra base hits and a pair of singles to storm out to a 13-0 advantage.
Â
After a leadoff error, Tondi and Semones each doubled to plate the first run of the frame. Senior Josh Wyatt and McKay each walked on four pitches before freshman Harry Browncleared the bases with a double down the right-field line. Sciorra, McPherson and Sisk followed with a triple and two homers, respectively, pushing the lead to 11-0.
Â
The Dukes plated their final two runs of the frame on a single and a double play before Longwood escaped the inning. JMU tallied just five hits in its final four innings, but scored at least once in each frame to close out the victory.
 QUOTING COACH IKENBERRY
"I'm really proud of the way these guys played tonight, especially on defense. Everyone had a big hit or two for us and our guys on the mound did a great job, but we made some huge plays in the field--especially up the middle--that helped us keep the momentum on our side."
DOUBLE-DIGIT FRAMES
The Dukes' 11-run second inning marked their first inning with at least 10 runs since they scored 10 in the third inning of a 25-9 victory over UNC Asheville on Feb. 25.
UP NEXT
The Dukes are idle for the next nine days as they take their off weekend from Colonial Athletic Association play. JMU will pick back up at home with a crucial weekend series against Towson on Friday-Sunday, May 5-7.
