Baseball Drops Tough 4-3 Decision at Northeastern

BROOKLINE, Mass. – Despite quality pitching, James Madison dropped a 4-3 decision to Northeastern to start the final Colonial Athletic Association baseball series of the season at Friedman Diamond on Thursday.
The Dukes dropped to 24-25 on the season and 7-15 in the CAA, while the Huskies improved to 26-23 overall and 14-7 in league play.
Sophomore right-hander Christian Bourne earned a tough-luck loss after throwing a career-high five innings, allowing just two runs and striking out three batters. Sophomore righty Matt Marsili pitched two innings of relief, allowing one run on two hits.
Junior shortstop Kyle McPherson, freshman outfielder Fox Semones and junior third baseman Bradley McKay led JMU at the plate, all with 2-for-4 days.
Down 2-0 in the fifth, McPherson legged out a triple to left center. In the next at-bat, Semones hit a double to the same spot to score McPherson and cut the lead to 2-1. In the seventh, redshirt senior first baseman Brett Johnson singled home freshman centerfielder DaVonn Griffin, who had reached on an error, to cut the lead to 3-2.
In the ninth, down 4-2, Semones singled up the middle to lead off the frame. He stole second base, then advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Johnson was barely thrown out on a ground ball that scored Semones, but the Dukes would not rally past that.
QUOTING COACH IKENBERRY
"I was proud of the way Bourne pitched and got us deep in the ball game, then the bullpen did a nice job. The difference in that game is they got hits with two outs and runners in scoring position and we didn't. I thought our guys played really hard and competed the whole game. I was proud of the way we approached the game, we were just one big hit away."
