HARRISONBURG, Va. – No. 19 James Madison field hockey conquered No. 23 Old Dominion for a 3-2 victory after edging the Monarchs 2-1 in a shootout.

After trailing 2-0 just over 17 minutes into the game, the Dukes (2-0) kept the Monarchs (1-2) off the board for the next 83 minutes of play as they tied the game at 2-all. Freshman goalkeeper Caitlin Nelson came in to handle the shootout, shutting down four of the five Monarch attempts to help secure the JMU victory.

HOW WE GOT HERE

Junior forward Ashley Gippe scored two goals in regulation to tie the game at 2-all.
Junior forward Miranda Rigg and sophomore defender Florien Sondern each scored on their shootout attempts.
Senior goalkeeper Sara Kraeutler and redshirt-sophomore goalkeeper Kyler Zampiello combined to keep ODU off the board for the final 82:45 of standard play.
ODU scored on its first shootout attempt, but did not find the cage on the final four attempts.

THREE'S COMPANY
All three goalkeepers saw action in tonight's victory. Zampiello played a career-high 65 minutes and made the first saves of her collegiate career (7). Nelson saw the first action of her collegiate career, coming in for the shootout.

THE STILL OF THE NIGHT
Caitlin Nelson stood tall in goal for the shootout to help JMU secure the win.

SERIES NOTES

JMU has won the last two meetings with ODU, marking the first consecutive wins over the Monarchs since a three-game win-streak between 2007-08.
This is the second win for JMU over ODU at home. The last came 3-2 in a shootout on Sept. 11, 1994.
