HARRISONBURG, Va. – No. 19 James Madison field hockey (3-0) earned its first shutout victory of the season, taking down Appalachian State (1-2) 4-0.

Three of the Dukes' four goals came in the second half as they outshot the Mountaineers 17-1 over the last 35 minutes of play. Sophomore Lisa Lejeune led the way with a pair of goals, scoring them just 16 seconds apart.

HOW WE GOT HERE

Lejeune first scored by deflecting a hard shot from senior Hannah Hall at the 53:07 mark. She followed with a steal off the restart and took on the App State keeper one-on-one before slotting it into an empty cage.
Sophomore Alicia Cooperman scored her first collegiate goal to break the 0-0 stalemate just before halftime. She took a feed from the line from senior Melanie Kusakavitch and slotted it into the left corner.
Sophomore Florien Sondern capped the victory by scoring off a corner save rebound with less than 30 seconds remaining in the game.

Lisa Lejeune tied her single-game career high with a pair of goals Friday evening.

NUMBERS OF NOTE

JMU forced the App State goalkeeper Rachel Gaines to make 11 saves in the contest as 15 of the Dukes' 25 shots were on goal.
The Dukes successfully defended five penalty corner attempts by the Mountaineers.

Senior Melanie Kusakavitch had her first assist of 2017, quickly passing the ball off to Cooperman.
Sophomore Alicia Cooperman scored her first collegiate goal.
Both sophomores Lisa Lejeune and Florien Sondern tallied their first goals of the season.

SERIES NOTES
JMU has won 11 straight meetings with Appalachian State. In all 11 meetings, the Dukes have won by no fewer than three goals. JMU is also 11-0 all-time at home against the Mountaineers.
