#13 JMU Drops 3-0 Contest to #7 North Carolina

DURHAM, N.C. – Despite a strong attacking pressure in the second half by No. 13 James Madison field hockey, a 3-goal first-half by No. 7 North Carolina sank the Dukes 3-0 on the road Sunday afternoon.

After being held to just two shots over the first 35 minutes, JMU (5-2) made seven attempts in the second half. The Tar Heels (6-2) had 22 shot attempts spread evenly over both halves, but were only able to connect in the first 32 minutes of play.

This is JMU's first shutout loss since a 1-0 loss to then-No. 10 Delaware on Sept. 30, 2016.

The Dukes continue their road swing with a pair in Louisville, Ky. next weekend. No. 13 JMU faces Ball State in a neutral-site match on Friday, Sept. 22 at 3:30 p.m. before taking on No. 11 Louisville on Sept. 24 at noon. The 2017 JMU field hockey season is presented by Blue Ridge Insurance.

KEYS TO THE GAME
- UNC scored just 2:55 in to play and added another tally just five minutes later. The Tar Heels capped the first stanza with a score just 3:48 before halftime.
- Senior goalkeeper Sara Kraeutler and redshirt-sophomore goalkeeper Kyler Zampiello combined for 11 saves over 70 minutes while senior McKenzie Ridgely added a defensive save.
- The Tar Heels earned eight corners, a season-high for a JMU opponent.
- JMU earned five penalty corners for the second consecutive game.
