HARRISONBURG, Va. - James Madison outshot George Washington by a 10-5 margin on Sunday night at Sentara Park, but Brittany Cooper scored in the final minute of the first overtime period to give GW a 2-1 win over the Dukes in both teams' final non-conference women's soccer action of the season. The Dukes fell to 5-4, while the Colonials improved to 5-2-1.
Sophomore
Haley Crawford scored JMU's lone goal, her team-best fifth of the season, in the seventh minute and led the Dukes with a trio of shots. Despite the advantage in shots, which included a dominant 8-1 margin in the opening half, the Dukes put just four attempts on frame, with GW tallying three shots on goal.
HOW THEY SCORED
JMU
7' | Crawford opened the scoring in short order after junior
Stephanie Hendrie opened up the left wing with a pass. The sophomore forward took a pair of dribbles and drilled a shot inside the near post that put the Dukes up, 1-0.
GW
59' | The Colonials broke through on a set piece just before the hour mark, with Deena Desilva providing the service on a free kick from 40 yards. Sara Messinger headed the ball down into the path of Alexis Williams, who managed to tap the shot through traffic to level things at 1-1.
100' | Cooper provided the gamewinner with just 30 seconds remaining in the first overtime period, running onto a pass just past midfield, fighting off a defender and finishing one-on-one from just inside the box.

QUOTING COACH LOMBARDO
"We had a disappointing result tonight. We learned a valuable lesson about respecting an opponent; an early goal gives you a false sense of how a match will play out. Credit to George Washington for hanging around long enough to convert two good chances. All of our focus now needs to be on CAA play and we want to manage it better than the first half of the season."
UP NEXT
The Dukes will remain at home to kick off their Colonial Athletic Association schedule this week, as they welcome in-state for William & Mary to Sentara Park for a 7 p.m. bout on Thursday, Sept. 21. The Tribe is 4-5 on the season after dropping a 1-0 decision to UNC Greensboro on Sunday afternoon.
