HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – In a crucial Colonial Athletic Association match, the James Madison men's soccer team tallied three more points after defeating Hofstra 2-0 on Saturday night. The Dukes improve to 8-3-2 overall and 6-1 in the CAA while the Pride falls to 6-5-2 and 3-2-1.
With the win, JMU remains at the top of the CAA standings with 18 points from six conference victories while UNCW and Hofstra follow with 13 and 10 points, respectively.
HOW IT HAPPENED
44' | With nearly a minute left in the first half, freshman Melker Anshelm found redshirt sophomore Carson Jeffris who booted home his fourth goal of the season from 18 yards out.
55' | After Jeffris was taken down inside the box, the Dukes were awarded a penalty kick. Junior Manuel Ferriol took the PK for the second consecutive match and notched his fourth goal of 2018.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
JMU outshot Hofstra 14-7, taking seven shots on goal while holding the Pride to only two. Redshirt sophomore TJ Bush recorded his seventh shutout in which he grabbed two saves, improving his season total to 37 while Alex Ashton made five for Hofstra.
QUOTING HEAD COACH PAUL ZAZENSKI
"I thought the guys executed our game plan and dictated the tempo of the match which got us the win. Hofstra is always a physical site and they play on turf so it always makes for a difficult game. We have kept a fair number of shutouts this season and will need that defensive mentality down the stretch."
UP NEXT
The Dukes return to Harrisonburg to close out their final four matches of the regular season at home, beginning with Navy on Wednesday, October 17. The match is slated for a 7 p.m. start and will be available to watch on MadiZONE.
