WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - James Madison women's soccer moved into a tie for first place in the Colonial Athletic Association with its fourth win in a row on Sunday afternoon, closing its regular-season road schedule with a 2-1 win at William & Mary that clinched the Dukes' spot in the CAA Tournament.
Â
The Dukes (9-7, 6-1 CAA), winners of eight of their last nine matches, took advantage of a 63rd-minute red card against W&M (6-8-1, 3-3-1 CAA), with sophomores Ginger Deel and Sophie Brause providing the JMU goals on the afternoon despite a 15-10 deficit in shots.
Â
Deel, who put both her shots on frame, and junior Claire Meiser each tallied a pair of shots to lead the JMU offense, while junior Hannah McShea notched five saves to give the Dukes the chance to grab the win.
Â
HOW THEY SCORED
JMU
9' | Deel opened the scoring just 8:39 into the contest, picking up her third goal in as many matches as she fought through a defender to rip a shot from 12 yards that caromed off the keeper and the left post before trickling across the line to put the Dukes up, 1-0.
76' | Brause provided the gamewinner with less than 15 minutes to play, taking advantage of a scrum following JMU's 10th and final corner kick to poke home the chance from six yards out and provide the Dukes their final margin.
W&M
18' | Sarah Segan levelled things early in the first half, finding herself on the end of a bouncing cross from Page Frantz and heading the ball just under the crossbar from eight yards out to make it 1-1.

QUOTING COACH WALTERS
"After that game, I have a great appreciation for this history rivalry! It was a hard-fought battle between two teams that were up for it on the day. I thought our front six were very dangerous today and created some problems for William & Mary. Sophie Brause came in as a sub and changed the game with her work rate!"
Â
"This win put us in good position in the CAA table heading into the final week. We've clinched a spot in the CAA Tournament will be fighting to see if we can finish in the top two and earn the right to play at home for the tournament's opening weekend!"
