HARRISONBURG, Va – James Madison men's tennis head coach
Steve Secord announced on Thursday (Nov. 15) the signing of Holden Koons to a National Letter of Intent for the 2019-20 season.
Â
The senior at Dallastown Area High School turned heads early in his high school career when he was a York Adams Interscholastic Athletic Association singles (YAIAA) and doubles champion during his freshman season. Since, Koons has won two more YAIAA singles championships and one more YAIAA doubles championship.
Â
"I watched Holden play for the first time at the South Carolina ITF his junior year and was really impressed with his game," assistant coach
Jason Sinkoff said. "He has no weaknesses and is strong from the baseline; always looking for that opportunity to get to the net and end the point. He's continued to work hard on his game and I'm very confident he'll develop into a strong college tennis player."
Â
The 5'11 lefty has won the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) District 3 Championship each of his first three seasons with the Wildcats. He's made steady progress through his years in the final PIAA state tournament, falling in the round of 16 his freshman season and the quarterfinals his sophomore season before being the runner-up in his junior season. Koons, a four-star recruit, was the YAIAA Player of the Year in 2018 and has yet to lose a singles match prior to the state tournament in high school play.
Â
"In Holden we are getting a high quality young man who is a great tennis player, excels in the classroom, and will give 110 percent every single day," Sinkoff said. "The guys got along with him great on his official visit earlier this year and are very excited that he's joining the JMU family."
Â
He enters his senior season as the No. 3 player in the state of Pennsylvania by Tennis Recruiting Network. His dad, Mark Koons, coaches the Wildcats.
Â
Academically, the senior is an honor roll student who's a member of Dallastown Area's National Honor Society.
Â
Koons plans to major in quantitative finance.

QUOTING HEAD COACH STEVE SECORD
"We were impressed with Holden from the first time we saw him play. We have become more impressed as we were able to get to know him as a person. It is always reassuring when other junior and college coaches comment to us that we got a great commit in Holden. We know that he's a hard worker and will fit in well with the guys on the team. I feel he will have an immediate impact and look forward to working with him for four years!"
