Dukes Drop 9-7 Decision in Extras to Ohio

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The James Madison softball team dropped an extra inning 9-7 decision to Ohio on Saturday afternoon during day two of the JMU Invitational. Ohio tallied five late runs in the sixth inning to tie the game at 6-all to force extras and they would plate two in the top of the ninth to seal the win.

The Dukes fell to 19-6 while Ohio upped their record to 9-12.

Sophomore Kate Gordon led the Dukes at the plate going 2-for-4 tallying two runs and three RBI after a blast over the center field wall to record her fifth home run of the season.

Freshman pitcher Payton Buresch took the loss pitching 7 1/3 innings, facing 31 batters only fanning two and walking two. She moved to 9-4 in the circle after allowing three runs on eight hits to record a 1.37 ERA for the game.

Cambry Arnold had an RBI double to left field in the third to put the Dukes on the board first as Madison Naujokas came home. Naujokas was the only other Duke to have a multi-base hit with a double down the left field like in the fourth.

The Bobcats had a lead off with a home run in the top of the sixth to start a five run rally to tie the game. They tallied three more singles in that inning, advancing runners home. In the top of the ninth with one out Ohio doubled through the left side sending one runner home, followed by a single to left field to extend their lead by two.

The Dukes couldn't find an answer in the ninth after stranding a runner on third base. Gordon had a hard hit fly out to right field to end the game.

"Today was a tough battle that we came out on the wrong side of. We couldn't string enough hits together to get the job done and we were not as productive at the plate as we needed to be. We need to learn from our mistakes today and build off of them when we take the field tomorrow."

The Dukes close out the JMU Invitational with a matchup against ECU at 12:30 p.m. tomorrow.
