HONOLULU – The James Madison softball team powered past BYU, 10-2 in six innings on Wednesday evening after senior Alyssa Buddle hit a grand slam in the top of the first to kick off the Dukes stand at the Spring Fling Tournament in Honolulu, Hawaii.
The Dukes upped their record to 15-2 and extended their win streak to 12. BYU fell to 9-12.
Sophomore Odicci Alexander improved her personal record in the circle to 9-1 after pitching all six innings only allowing two runs on four hits while walking one and striking out three. The Boydton, Va. product also was stellar at the plate going 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI. Her long ball came in the top of the fifth over the center field wall and she added a two RBI single in the top of the sixth.
Buddle's grand slam was her first hit of the season and also was the Dukes' first grand slam of the year. She sent a rocket over the right center wall to send home runners who reached on walks and a fielders choice.
BYU answered to a Dukes five-run first inning with a homerun in the bottom of third and would hit another long ball in the bottom of the seventh, but couldn't string together enough hits to comeback from the Dukes dominate bats.
QUOTING COACH LAPORTE
"Tonight was a great game, we made a lot of hard contact with the ball and it paid off. It was great to have Alyssa come up to bat and have her first hit of the season be a grand slam. Our girls were patient at the plate and looked for pitches they knew they could hit. We are already looking forward to tomorrow's games and hope to come out just as strong."
UP NEXT
The Dukes will take the field again tomorrow to face East Carolina and Longwood at 6:30 p.m. ET and 9 p.m. ET, respectively. Last week the Dukes beat the Pirates in six innings in a 9-0 win and the Lancers 4-2 in eight innings.
