HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison dropped a tough 2-1 decision to the University of Maryland in 12 innings of non-conference baseball action at Eagle Field on Tuesday evening.
The Dukes (15-16) plated the first run of the game for the fourth consecutive time but just could not hold on, as the Terps (16-17) scored both of their runs late in the game.
Freshman Josh Jones led the way at the plate for JMU, as he turned in a 3-for-5 performance, his third three-hit game of the season.
On the mound, sophomore Brett Ayer was handed the loss after tossing 2.2 innings, giving up one run with five strikeouts to move to 1-1 on the season.
James Madison plated the first run off a ground ball to third that scored senior Adam Sisk in the first inning. Maryland battled throughout the game, eventually scoring the tying run in the top half of the ninth off a double down the left field line.
In the 12th inning, a single to left field with the bases loaded scored the winning run for the Terps, defeating JMU, 2-1.
QUOTING COACH IKE
"Good midweek college baseball game. I thought our bullpen did an outstanding job, and we knew going into the game that we were going to throw a lot of pitchers. I thought our guys played pretty well all game and we had opportunities to win the game but we did not get that big hit when we needed it."
UP NEXT
The Dukes will face in-state foe George Mason in Fairfax, Va., on Wednesday, with first pitch slated for 3 p.m.
