FAIRFAX, Va. – A two-run sixth inning provided just enough as James Madison slipped past George Mason, 2-1, in non-conference baseball at Spuhler Field on Wednesday evening.
Â
The Dukes (16-16) scored both runs without a hit , while limiting the Patriots (14-17) to just one run despite multiple bases-loaded situations.
Â
Senior Ryan Coale and sophomore Fox Semones accounted for JMU's hits. Coale broke up a no-hit bid in the seventh inning with a bunt single. Semones added a double in the eighth.Â
Â
Junior Christian Bourne (1-1)Â notched his first win of the season by tossing 1.1 innings, striking out a batter and giving up one run on one hit. Junior Dan Goggin earned the first save of his career by shutting down Mason in the final 2.1 innings.
Â
In the sixth inning, senior Tanner Dofflemyer scored the first run off a wild pitch. Sophomore DaVonn Griffin scored JMU's final run on a sacrifice fly to center field by senior Adam Sisk.
Â
Mason scored its run off a grounder to second base in the bottom of the sixth.
Â
QUOTING COACH IKE
"Good to get back in the win column. We pitched and played really good defense and scored just enough runs to win. Bechtold did a nice job starting for us on the mound and the bullpen also did an outstanding job."
