Dukes Fall at Delaware After Close Fight

NEWARK, Del. – James Madison baseball dropped a close 7-6 decision to Delaware Saturday afternoon at Bob Hannah Field.

The Dukes (20-19, 5-9 CAA) kept close to the Blue Hens (20-16, 7-4 CAA) after putting up three runs in the top of the fourth inning to stay on pace, but an untimely run from the Hens sealed the deal.

Seniors Adam Sisk and Zach Tondi turned in the Dukes' multi-hit performances while six different Dukes made it home. Senior Ryan Coale and freshman Hunter Johnson had two RBIs apiece.

In the circle, senior Matt Colon was charged with the loss after pitching an inning, moving to 1-1 on the season. Colon allowed two hits, but struck out two. Sophomore Shelton Perkins threw 4 2/3 innings, fanning seven batters.

Delaware quickly took the lead after scoring three runs in the bottom of the first, then added another in the second. In the top of the third a Sisk single brought sophomore DaVonn Griffin home, opening the scoreboard for the Dukes.

JMU closed the gap even more, scoring three runs in a row at the top of the fourth including the only dinger of the game coming off Johnson's bat. The Dukes found their first lead of the game in the seventh as two batters were hit by pitches in a bases-loaded situation.

Disaster struck in the top of the eighth as Delaware once and for all pulled into the lead as it scored on an error and pulled out the win.
