ELON, N.C. – The James Madison softball team used a strong offensive attack, racking up 10 runs on 14 hits, to lead the Dukes to a series sweep over Elon in a 10-2 decision on Sunday afternoon.
Â
The Dukes improved to 33-10 on the season and 13-2 in Colonial Athletic Association play, they currently sit in second in the league standings. Elon fell to 20-25 and 4-11 in conference play.
Â
Senior Morgan Tolle capped off her stellar weekend by going 2-for-3, hitting a two-RBI home run over the left field wall, a single to center field and also drew a walk. Tolle racked up four long balls over the series to push her season total to 13.
Â
Sophomore Kate Gordon also had a productive day, going 3-for-4, scoring twice with all three hits being singles. Sophomore Natalie Cutright accounted for two of the other hits from the Dukes with a single and double, she also walked once and picked up an RBI off her extra base hit. Senior Ashley Samuels led all players with four RBI after she launched two doubles, one to left center and one to right center, each allowing two runners to score.
Â
In the circle, sophomore Odicci Alexander was credited with the win after pitching her 13th complete game of the season, upping her record to 18-5. She hurled six innings of work, only allowing four hits and two unearned runs while striking out eight over 24 batters faced.
Â
Elon did not cross home plate until the bottom of the fourth inning as they scored off a single and two fielding errors. They would pick up their second run in the bottom of the sixth, again on an error by the Dukes.
Â
QUOTING COACH LAPORTE
"I was happy with our production at the plate, we had some solid hits today that allowed us to get up early. We made some key mistakes in the field and we can't afford to make those going forward, but we will use them as learning experiences. Proud of Odicci for going the distance today in the circle and getting the job done."
Â
UP NEXT
The Dukes will head to Charlottesville on Wednesday for their last midweek action of the season with a single game against Virginia, first pitch is set for 6 p.m.
