Dukes Drop Doubleheader

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – James Madison dropped both games of the baseball doubleheader against College of Charleston via walk offs, losing game one, 2-1 followed by falling in game two, 3-2 in Colonial Athletic Association play on Sunday afternoon.
 
After the doubleheader, the Dukes moved to 15-15 (2-7 CAA) while the Cougars sit at 25-9 (7-2 CAA).
 
GAME ONE
A walk-off single to left field handed James Madison a tough 2-1 loss in extra innings (eight) as a CAA rule, states that game one of a Sunday doubleheader is seven innings.
 
Sophomore Kevin Kelly was dealt the tough loss on the mound to move to 2-3 on the season after tossing a career-high 7.2 innings with six strikeouts, giving up two runs (one earned) on six hits with only 93 pitches.
 
The Dukes got on board first in the fifth inning as sophomore Fox Semones dropped a nice bunt-single down the first base line that scored senior Adam Sisk from third. In the sixth, the Cougars tied the game at one apiece off a sacrifice fly to center field.
 
In the bottom of the eighth, junior Danny Wondrack hit a RBI-single to left field to drive home the game-winning run.
 
GAME TWO
A ninth-inning throwing error allowed Charleston to score the game-winning run from first base, sending the Dukes home with a tough 3-2 loss in the last game of the series.
 
Freshman Nick Stewart tossed a season-high 7.1 innings with nine strikeouts, giving up two runs (one earned) on two hits in the no decision. Junior Dan Goggin suffered the loss on the mound (3-2) after throwing one inning giving up an unearned run.
 
Sophomore Fox Semones and freshman Michael Morgan both tallied two hits in the contest, with Semones adding a RBI to his stat line and Morgan posting a run scored. Sophomore DaVonn Griffin added a 1-for-3 performance with a run scored and a RBI.
 
Both teams plated a run in the third, then Griffin hit a RBI single to right field in the seventh inning to give the Dukes the 2-1 lead. In the eighth, a sacrifice bunt back to the pitcher scored a run for the Cougars, evening the contest at two apiece.
 
In the bottom of ninth, the Cougars scored the game-winning run off an error throw trying to catch the runner from first advancing to second on the ground ball to short which made it to the fence beside the first base dugout.
 
UP NEXT
James Madison will host Maryland on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Eagle Field before traveling to Fairfax, Va., to face in-state foe George Mason on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
