HARRISONBURG, Va. - No. 17 James Madison field hockey dropped their season opener to No. 23 Liberty 6-1 on Friday evening at the JMU Field Hockey Complex. The Flames picked up their second season-opening victory over the Dukes as the two have battled in the opening game in four-straight seasons.

Liberty (1-0) held control of the ball for most of the first half, allowing the Dukes (0-1) to take just five shots, with only one on goal. The Flames held onto a 3-0 lead at halftime over JMU.

3:55 | Liberty opened up scoring with a goal from Kemy Meidane in the opening minutes following an early corner

8:36 | Agueda Moroni notched her second goal of the game with a dish from Alivia Klopp

27:08 | Mallory Fortenbaugh of Liberty scored off a corner to put the Flames up 3-0

36:14 |The Flames picked up the second goal by Moroni off a corner

50:52 | Liberty went up 5-0 off a rebound shot by Alivia Klopp

67:16 | Moroni of Liberty tallied a hattrick as she went on a fast break and took a shot all alone from the top of the corner

MATCH NOTES:

This is just the second season-opening loss in the past six seasons for JMU
Liberty and JMU faced each other for the fourth straight year in the season opener. The two teams are now tied 2-2 in series history
