RICHMOND, Va. – Following a shutout win to open league play, James Madison redshirt senior cornerback
Jimmy Moreland was named Colonial Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Week.
Moreland recorded five tackles, a tackle for loss, a pass breakup and returned an interception 56 yards for a touchdown in last Saturday's 51-0 triumph over William & Mary. The Royal Palm Beach, Fla., native was part of a dominant defensive effort by the Dukes, who held the Tribe to only 132 yards en route to capturing the biggest win in the history of the 41-game series.
Following the first four weeks of play, he leads the league with three interceptions, and the pick-six marked the second straight week he returned an interception for a score. Moreland also extended his JMU career interceptions record to 16 and now ranks third in program history with 218 career interception return yards.
It's the second career weekly honor for Moreland, who was named Special Teams Player of the Week last season on Sept. 8, 2017.
No. 2 James Madison (3-1, 1-0 CAA) hits the road to face intra-state rival Richmond (2-2, 0-1 CAA) on Saturday, Sept. 29. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. at Robins Stadium and it will be televised on NBC Sports Washington Plus.
