GREENSBORO, N.C. - In a tough Colonial Athletic Association match, the James Madison men's soccer team fell short to No. 14 UNCW, losing 2-0 on Saturday afternoon. This is JMU's first loss since September 2 against UC Irvine. The Dukes move to 5-3-1 overall and 3-1 in CAA while UNCW improves to 7-1-1 and 2-0-1.
JMU's offense was led by sophomore Peik Koskinen who took a career-high three shots, registering two on goal while junior Manuel Ferriol matched a season-high three shots. Redshirt sophomore TJ Bush tallied two saves and allowed his first goal since Radford on September 8.
HOW THEY SCORED
30' | Senior David Lozano scored the game-winning goal inside 18 yards with assists from Ben Fisher and Emil Elveroth.
78' | Sophomore Emil Elveroth tacked on the second point for UNCW, scoring his sixth goal on the season with freshman Cesar Cruz assisting.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
The Dukes outshot the Seahawks 11-10 with six shots on goal, but UNCW's Ryan Oretens made six saves in the net. UNCW edged JMU in corners, taking seven to JMU's four.
QUOTING HEAD COACH PAUL ZAZENSKI
"Today we didn't have the quality we needed to get a result against a top-level team. We had a lot of chances, but those chances didn't fall our way. We need to have more purpose in the final third and we didn't have it today. Credit to UNCW who scored at pivotal moments during the match. We look to reset against a very good NC State team on Tuesday."
UP NEXT
JMU will round out its North Carolina trip in Raleigh on Tuesday, Oct. 2 as they face NC State. The Wolfpack are No. 12 in the United Soccer Coaches Poll and No. 8 in Top Drawer Soccer. The match is slated for a 7 p.m. start and will be available on ACC Network Extra.
