FAIRFAX, Va. - James Madison erased a two-goal deficit on Thursday evening, but George Mason scored with less than 30 minutes left to hand the Dukes a 3-2 defeat in non-conference women's soccer at George Mason Stadium.
Â
Senior Hailey Stein and freshman Hannah Coulling tallied goals on either side of halftime as the Dukes (1-5) battled back from an early 2-0 hole that included an hour-long lightning delay. JMU held the Patriots (4-2) to just five shots in the second half, but Mason was able to bury its only shot on goal after the break for the gamewinner.
Â
Coulling led the Dukes' offense with a trio of shots, while junior Hannah McShea notched a pair of saves on the evening.
Â
HOW THEY SCORED
JMU
29' | Stein pulled a goal back for the Dukes before the half-hour mark, tallying her first of the season from six yards after a link-up from sophomore Ginger Deel and Coulling.
48' | Coulling levelled things shortly after halftime, burying a shot to the bottom-left corner to notch her first collegiate goal off a corner kick from junior Haley Crawford.
GEORGE MASON
5' | Jewel Christian opened the scoring less than five minutes in, scoring from the top of the 18 after a combination from Emma Van Der Vorst and Emily Bradshaw.
24' | Van Der Vorst doubled the lead less than 20 minutes later, scoring from six yards off a pass from Rebecca Callison.
63' | Olivia Reese notched the gamewinner just past the hour mark, volleying home a corner kick from Kayla Hamric to put the Patriots back on top.
Â
QUOTING COACH WALTERS
"Unfortunately, we didn't quite come out the way we needed to tonight. We missed out on a couple things tactically early and put ourselves in too big of a hole. I was very proud of the way the girls improved their execution and battled their way back, but we need to come out that way to get back on the right side of things."
Â
ALL-TIME HELPERS
Junior forward Haley Crawford picked up the 19th assist of her JMU career in Thursday's contest, moving her into sole possession of 11th place on the program's all-time career assists leaderboard. Crawford sits just one assist outside the top 10, trailing Teri Joyce (1999-02) in 10th by one and ninth-place Kim Germain (2005-08) by three.
Â
UP NEXT
The Dukes will return home for the weekend, welcoming High Point to Sentara Park on Sunday, Sept. 9 at 1 p.m. Currently, the Panthers are 1-4-1 this season, though they play host to Marshall on Friday evening.
