HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison wide receiver Riley Stapleton was named to the 2018 FCS ADA Academic All-Star Team, the Football Championship Subdivision Athletics Directors Association announced on Friday.
Stapleton is JMU's third-ever recipient of the award, which is now in its 21st year. He joins Dominick Richards (2015) and Matt Magerko (2005) as the program's honorees from the FCS ADA.
The Indiana, Pa., native holds a 3.22 cumulative grade-point average while majoring in communication studies. He was previously honored on the CAA Football Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll and was a JMU Athletic Director's Scholar-Athlete.
He was a Second Team All-CAA selection this past season after leading the Dukes with 62 receptions for 710 yards and seven touchdowns. Stapleton ranked fourth in the conference in both receptions per game (4.77) and receiving touchdowns while tallying the seventh-most receiving yards.
"One of the most important responsibilities that the FCS ADA has is the selection of the Annual Academic All-Star Team," FCS ADA President and Bryant Director of Athletics Bill Smith said. "This group of young men are some of the best and brightest football players and scholars in the country. They have been leaders on their individual campuses and have excelled in the classroom, their communities and on the gridiron. They truly exemplify FCS football and now we have the honor of naming them to the 2018 Academic All Star Team."
A total of 47 individuals across the FCS were selected from a pool of nearly 100 applicants. The Colonial Athletic Association ranked second amongst all conferences with seven selections.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be in their second year of athletics and academic standing at their current institution, have maintained a minimum 3.2 cumulative grade-point average on a 4.0 scale and be a starter or key contributor with legitimate athletics credentials.
