BREAKING DOWN THE SERIES
JMU and Richmond meet for the 37th time since beginning the in-state rivalry in 1981 and have meet each season since the 1987 campaign. The teams look to break an 18-18 tie in the all-time series. Since joining the league in 1993, the Dukes and Spiders have each won 13 times. JMU is on a three-game series win streak, winning one score games in both 2016 and 2017, followed by the largest win in series history last season with a 63-10 win at Richmond. A JMU win would mark the first time since the early 90's that a team would claim four straight. JMU won five in a row from 1987-91 and Richmond won the first four meetings between 1981 and 1985. JMU is 8-9 all-time at home vs. Richmond.
THE LAST TIME JMU AND RICHMOND MET
Back on Sept. 29, 2018, JMU blasted Richmond for the biggest win of the series with a 63-10 victory. JMU amassed 543 yards of offense, along with five takeaways to win its third straight over the Spiders. Ben DiNucci threw three touchdown passes, and Marcus Marshall ran for two. Kyndel Dean caught two of DiNucci's three touchdown tosses. Jawon Hamilton also returned the opening kick 93 yards for a touchdown, and Jimmy Moreland had a 100-yard pick-six.
JMU TO HONOR SENIORS SATURDAY
JMU will recognize its senior class prior to kickoff on Saturday for Senior Day. Over the past four seasons, JMU has compiled a 46-7 overall record, including a 28-2 mark in CAA play. The Dukes won outright conference titles in 2016 and 2017, winning the national title in 2016 and finishing runner-up in 2017. They were part of JMU's program-record, 26-game win streak between the 2016 and 2017 seasons.
DUKES CLINCH AT LEAST A SHARE OF CAA CROWN
With two weeks left, JMU has already clinched at least a share of the CAA championship, sitting at 6-0 in league games. A win against Richmond would secure the fourth CAA title in five seasons, the third of which would be in outright fashion. Three squads sit at 4-2 in the CAA in Richmond, New Hampshire and Albany. UNH and UA play this Saturday also. Having already clinched at least a share, 2019 marks the eighth conference championship in school history.
JMU ROLLS PAST NEW HAMPSHIRE FOR NINTH STRAIGHT WIN
JMU scored on its first seven possessions and used a 41-point surge to blow past New Hampshire, 54-16. Percy Agyei-Obese rushed for a career-high 130 yards and three touchdowns, and Ben DiNucci threw for 293 yards and two touchdowns, to go with a rushing score. Brandon Polk also caught five passes for a career-high 136 yards and a touchdown. John Daka made 2.0 sacks, and both MJ Hampton and Wayne Davis had seven tackles each. Trailing 10-3, JMU reeled off 41 points between the first and third quarters en route to its biggest win over UNH.
Ben DiNucci was named CAA Offensive Player of the Week after a season-best performance in the win over New Hampshire. DiNucci completed 19-of-24 passes for a season-high 293 yards and two touchdowns and also ran for a score. Playing just over three quarters, he connected on a season-best 79.2% of his throws and tallied all three touchdowns in the first half, as the Dukes rallied from a 10-3 deficit. The performance came against a UNH team that ranked seventh in FCS in scoring defense (16.6 ppg).
SCOUTING RICHMOND
The Spiders enter Saturday's matchup with a 5-5 record and 4-2 mark in CAA play after falling 35-28 to Villanova last week. Richmond averages 25.4 points per game while conceding 26.4 to its foes. Offensively, UR ranks ninth in scoring. It's eighth in total offense (378.7), rushing for 155.3 (5th) and passing for 223.4 (8th). Joe Mancuso has passes for 1,654 yards and 12 touchdowns with seven picks while also leading the team with 588 rushing yards and 10 scores.
On the flip side, the Spiders are sixth in the league in scoring defense and third in total defense (364), leading the league against the pass (203). Tyler Dressler is second in the CAA in tackles (9.4), while Tristan Wheeler is fifth (8.6). Maurice Jackson is also fourth in sacks (7.5) and sixth in TFL (13.5). Russ Huesman is in his third season at the helm, leading UR to a 15-17 record. He also won three SoCon titles at Chattanooga, going 59-37 during his eight years with the Mocs.
