Carter, Daka Named Finalists for STATS FCS Buck Buchanan Award

CHICAGO, Ill. – James Madison senior defensive ends Ron'Dell Carter and John Daka were both named top-26 finalists for the 2019 STATS FCS Buck Buchanan Award, which is presented annually to the nation's top defensive player.

Both Dukes are among the nation's top edge rushers. They've combined for 43 tackles for loss and 22 sacks while leading one of the country's top defenses, which leads the FCS in rushing defense (62.8) and fourth in total defense (276.6).

Carter has tallied 53 tackles, to go with a team-high 22.5 for loss and 9.5 sacks. He also has 10 quarterback hurries and a forced fumble. Carter ranked third nationally in tackles for loss and 16th in sacks. He produced seven games with at least 2.0 tackles for loss, including a career-best 6.0 at William & Mary.

Daka registered 49 tackles, as well as 20.5 tackles for loss and a team-best 12.5 sacks during the regular season. He also produced eight hurries, forced two turnovers and had a fumble recovery. Daka ranks seventh nationally in both tackles for loss and sacks. He had at least 1.5 sacks in six games.

A national panel of over 150 sports information and media relations directors, broadcasters, writers and other dignitaries will select the winners. Voting is based on the regular season.

The Buck Buchanan Award winner will be announced on Jan. 10 in Frisco, Texas, on the eve of the national championship game.

JMU has had two winners of the Buchanan Award previously, as Arthur Moats won it in 2009 and Derrick Lloyd was the program's first winner in 2001. Since the award's inception, JMU has now produced 13 finalists for the accolade.
