BREAKING DOWN THE SERIES
JMU and New Hampshire meet for the 20th time this weekend, including the 16th-ever conference matchup. The series began in 1982 and resumed fairly regularly when the Dukes and Wildcats became conference members in 1993. In league games, JMU holds a narrow 8-7 advantage on UNH.
This marks the fourth straight season the teams have met, as UNH snapped JMU's three-game win streak last season with a 35-24 win in Durham, N.H. JMU is 6-3 all-time at home against UNH, which includes winning two straight with a 55-22 win in the 2016 FCS Second Round and a 21-0 triumph on JMU's 2017 Homecoming - the only shutout in the series. The series has been tightly contested points-wise, as JMU averages wins by a margin of 26.4 to 24.6.
THE LAST TIME JMU AND UNH MET
Back on Nov. 3, 2018, New Hampshire forced six turnovers, including two pick-sixes en route to a 35-24 win against JMU at Wildcat Stadium. JMU threw four interceptions and lost two fumbles, yet out-gained UNH 486-315. Trevor Knight threw for two touchdowns and gained 257 yards of offense and utilized a pair of first-half pick-sixes to lead wire-to-wire. Cole Johnson threw for a career-high 398 yards, which was the third-highest total by a JMU player in single-game history.
CAA PICTURE HEADING DOWN THE STRETCH
With three weeks left, JMU is alone atop the CAA standings as the sole unbeaten team, at 5-0. Three teams are within two games of the Dukes, as New Hampshire and Richmond are tied for second, at 4-1. Albany sits at 3-2, and both Villanova and Elon are 3-3. JMU can clinch at least a share of the CAA title with a win against UNH, coupled with a Villanova win over Richmond.
The Dukes are seeking their fourth conference championship in five seasons, as they won in 2015, 2016 and 2017. With wins in each of the next two weeks, JMU would claim the outright title, which would mark the third time in four seasons it would capture the CAA trophy outright.
DUKES RANK #2 FOR 11TH STRAIGHT WEEK
JMU is #2 for the 11th straight week in both the STATS FCS Top 25 and AFCA FCS Coaches' Poll. The Dukes garnered one first-place vote from the media, trailing just defending champion, North Dakota State, which took home 144 first-place votes. Weber State remained third and South Dakota State fourth, while Northern Iowa moved into fifth.
Four CAA teams are ranked. Following JMU were #18 Villanova, #21 Towson and #23 New Hampshire. JMU has been nationally ranked every week since Nov. 10, 2014 and inside the top 15 every week since the start of the 2015 season. It's also been top 10 every week since Sept. 26, 2016.
SCOUTING NEW HAMPSHIRE
The Wildcats enter Saturday's matchup with a 5-3 record and 4-1 mark in CAA play after rallying for a 28-20 win against Villanova this past week. New Hampshire averages 20.1 points per game while conceding 16.6 to its foes.
Offensively, UNH ranks last in the CAA in scoring. It's ninth in total offense (354.0), rushing for 155.0 yards per game (5th) and passing for 199.0 (10th). UNH is tied for the most interceptions thrown, with 10. Running backs Evan Gray and Carlos Washington Jr. both rank in the top eight of the CAA in rushing, as Gray has run for 567 yards and Washington 487. Max Brosmer has thrown for 1,483 yards and 10 touchdowns with nine INTs, completing 57% of passes.
On the flip side, the Wildcats are second in the league in scoring defense and total defense (343.0). UNH is third against the pass (206.8) and fourth versus the rush (136.2). It leads the league with 13 interceptions. Evan Horn has a team-high four interceptions, while Prince Smith Jr. has three. Horn also has 51 tackles, while Pop Bush has 50.
Ricky Santos is in his first season as interim head coach, taking the role for legendary UNH coach Sean McDonnell, who took a medical leave of absence. Santos is a 2008 graduate of UNH where he passed for 13,212 yards and 123 touchdowns as a signal caller.
.500 OR BETTER NOW 17 STRAIGHT SEASONS
JMU's success from year to year has come to be expected, as the Dukes have secured at least a .500 record or better for a league-best 17 straight seasons. JMU also produced its 15th winning season during the timeframe this season, the only team in the CAA to achieve the feat.
The Dukes have now secured a winning record in 30 of their 48 seasons since beginning football in 1972. JMU tallied nine wins in a program-record four consecutive seasons from 2015-18 and looks to make it five with a win this weekend.
