QUICK HITS
- James Madison men's basketball is set to open the 51st season in program history on Wednesday evening, welcoming the Charlotte 49ers to the JMU Convocation Center for a 7:30 p.m. matchup.
- The Dukes took a step forward in 2018-19, going 14-19 on the year, including a 6-12 mark in Colonial Athletic Association play.
- Despite the graduation of departed guard Stuckey Mosley, the Dukes reuturn three other players who averaged double-digit scoring last season in junior guards Matt Lewis (16.4ppg) and Darius Banks (12.3) and junior forward Dwight Wilson (10.2), who also pulled down 7.8 rebounds per contest in a breakout sophomore season.
- Prior to the season, both Lewis and Banks were named to Preseason All-CAA teams, with Lewis earning a spot on the All-CAA First Team and Banks being tabbed to the Second Team heading into 2019-20.
- The Dukes were tabbed to finish fourth in the preseason poll of the league's coaches and media members, earning three first-place votes along the way in one of the closest preseason polls in league history.
- Heading into the season, JMU welcomed a six-member freshman class, including forward Michael Christmas, Dalton Jefferson and Julien Wooden, as well as guards Zyon Dobbs, Jayvis Harvey and Quinn Richey.
- Charlotte comes to Harrisonburg to open its season after going 8-21 in 2018-19, the first season under the direction of head coach Ron Sanchez. The 49ers return six players from last year's playing roster, adding a pair of redshirts and seven newcomers.
- Among those returners are sophomore guard Malik Martin, who will be Charlotte's top returning scorer at 9.4 points per contest, and junior forward Milos Supica, who led the 49ers with 4.7 rebounds per game.
- The Dukes and 49ers will match up for the fourth season in a row on Wednesday, meeting for the eighth time in history after coming together for four consecutive years from 1994-97 The Dukes have won the last two games, their first two victories in the series.
- After Charlotte swept the series in the 90s and won the 2016 matchup in Charlotte, JMU picked up five-point wins at both gyms, including a 64-59 battled in Charlotte last season.
- In last year's matchup, the Dukes built an 18-point second-half lead and held off a hard-charging Charlotte team, with JMU holding the 49ers to just 39.6 percent (21-53) shooting from the floor. Then-sophomore Darius Banks racked up 21 points to lead all scorers, while then-sophomore Dwight Wilson grabbed 12 boards in the victory.
