HARRISONBURG, Va. – No. 22 James Madison softball notched its seventh consecutive win and its fifth straight run-rule victory as the Dukes dominated Morgan State 15-1 to close out the JMU Dukes Invitational.
Â
JMU improves to 15-5 overall after posting a perfect 4-0 record in its home-opening weekend while MSU falls to 6-16.Â
Â
Four Dukes had a multi-hit game over the Bears:
Hannah File,
Logan Newton,
Odicci Alexander and
Kate Gordon. Gordon, Newton and
Megan Good each produced home runs in the contest.Â
Â
With a monstrous first inning, the Dukes tallied seven runs on five singles and two doubles to jump out to an early lead. After a scoreless third inning, JMU tacked on six more runs in the third including three long balls.Â
Â
Starting off the home run rally was Gordon as she sent a three-run homer over the wall in right for her ninth of the 2019 campaign. Alexander reached on a single through the middle before Good brought her home on a long ball to center. Newton followed suit with a solo shot for back-to-back home runs while giving JMU a 13-0 lead.Â
Â
The Dukes let up two hits and a run in the fourth, but that's all the damage Morgan State was able to do. Freshman
Lexi Lomax garnered her second hit of the season and JMU scored two runs in the bottom of the frame to secure the victory at 15-1.Â
Â
Sophomore
Payton Buresch earned her first win in the circle this season (1) as she pitched five complete innings while only giving up one run.
Â
FOR HISTORY'S SAKE
- Good's 38th career home run is the second most in program history. She only needs nine more to pass Jailyn Ford – the all-time leader with 46.Â
- It was the first time JMU has hit back-to-back home runs since Natalie Cutright and Kierstin Roadcap against Delaware on April 4, 2017. Â
QUOTING COACH LAPORTE
