RICHMOND, Va. - Sophomore
Nick Schlickenrieder posted the first top-10 finish of his career on Tuesday afternoon, leading the way as James Madison men's golf took home a third-place finish at the 2019 VCU Invitational, hosted by VCU on the par-72, 6,927-yard Tuckahoe Creek course at the Country Club of Virginia.
Schlickenrieder capped his strong week with a career-low round of 3-under 69, posting four birdies and a single bogey across a clean 18 holes that propelled him 12 spots up the leaderboard to finish tied for eighth on the 75-player leaderboard.
The sophomore was one of just five players in the field to shoot under par in all three rounds this week.
As a team, the Dukes battled spurts of inclement weather and difficult final-day pins to post a final-round 284 (-4) that sealed sole possession of third to close out the 12-team event. The performance left JMU just four shots off team champion Old Dominion, which shot a final-round 277 (-11) to vault four spots and into first place.
Senior
Walker Cress and sophomore
George Heath continued to match each other's consistent play, posting identical scores of even-par 72 in their final rounds to remain tied and close out the weekend in 15th place at 212 (-4).
Sophomore
Ignacio De Pineda continued his climb with a final-round 71 (-1) that lifted him 11 spots into a tie for 41st at 219 (+3), while junior
Ignacio Montero held onto a top-20 finish, taking home a tie for 19th at 213 (-3, 69-70-74).
Playing as an individual in his first collegiate tournament, freshman
Neal Shipley carded a final-round 77 (+5) to close the week in a tie for 62nd (226).
QUOTING COACH FORBES
"Not the leaderboard finish we were hoping for today, but I was pleased that our guys continued to battle through some bad weather and a difficult scoring day. Credit to the leaders, as they played some really strong golf on a difficult day. We'll come back home with a tournament under our belt knowing what we need to work on."
UP NEXT
The Dukes will be back in action this time next week, when they travel to River Run Country Club in Davidson, N.C. to take part in the River Run Collegiate on Sept. 23-24.
