QUICK HITS
- The James Madison Dukes will return from a lengthy hiatus with their first game in 20 days on Saturday afternoon, traveling south to Greenville, N.C. to face East Carolina in a 2 p.m. matchup.
- Due to postponements from COVID-19, JMU's last game was back on Sunday, Nov. 29, when the Dukes picked up a hard-fought 67-59 victory over Radford to cap the opening weekend at the Atlantic Union Bank Center.
- The Dukes are 2-1 in a chaotic 2020-21 season, having picked up victories over Limestone University and Radford across the opening week of play, while dropping a tough 83-73 decision to an experienced Norfolk State team.
- Seniors Matt Lewis and Zach Jacobs return to lead a new-look JMU squad that welcomes 10 newcomers and returns just five players from last season's 9-21 campaign that saw the Dukes go 2-16 in league play.
- Lewis is averaging 20 points per contest through the opening two games, while newcomer junior Vado Morse is adding 14.5 ppg to go with a team-high 4.5 assists per game.
- Justin Amadi and Terell Strickland are pacing the freshmen class, as Amadi is third on the team in scoring at 13.0 points and 4.5 rebounds per game, while Strickland joins Morse with 4.5 assists per contest to go with 5.0 steals.
- While the Dukes were picked to finish ninth in the Colonial Athletic Association in this season's preseason poll, Lewis was named the CAA Preseason Player of the Year, the first Duke to earn that nod in the preseason.
SCOUTING THE PIRATES
- East Caroliina has started the 2020-21 season in strong fashion, opening the season with five straight wins before dropping a 55-70 decision at SMU on Wednesday in its AAC opener to fall to 5-1 (0-1 AAC) on the season.
- Senior forward Jaylen Gardner has continued to lead the Pirates all over the court this season, racking up 19.0 points and 7.3 rebounds per contest through ECU's opening six contests.
SERIES HISTORY
- East Carolina currently ranks as the Dukes' eighth-longest all-time series, with Saturday's matching marking the 49th time the two schools have met in men's basketball. JMU leads the all-time series 36-12 and has won 10 of the last 11 matchups between the teams.
- The Dukes have been nearly as successful on ECU's home court as they have at home, having won nine of the last 10 contests played in Greenville, including a 73-72 win on Stuckey Mosley's running shot during their last visit on Nov. 9, 2018.
- In last year's bout in Harrisonburg, the Dukes erupted on the offensive end, hitting 31 of their 52 shots (59.6%) and knocking down 12 three-pointers on their way to a 99-89 victory at the since-retired JMU Convocation Center.
- Then-junior Matt Lewis racked up 16 points, all in the second half, to help lead the way in that victory, while then-freshman Michael Christmas knocked down all five of his three-pointers on his way to o18 points of his own.
