BLACKSBURG, Va. - James Madison dropped a tough 4-3 decision at in-state foe Virginia Tech on Sunday afternoon at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
The loss evened JMU's record to 2-2, while the Hokies remained unbeaten with a 4-0 record.
JMU claimed one of three doubles matches and split singles play, winning three.
The Dukes took an advantage in doubles play, as senior Jona Roka and sophomore Daria Afanasyeva took a 6-4 win from Erika Cheng and Nika Kozar on court two. The Dukes fell in the next two doubles matches, both by scores of 6-4, to trail 1-0 entering singles.
After VT took a 2-0 lead with a straight-set win on court one, sophomore Kylie Moulin secured the first singles win for JMU, taking down Nina Sorkin in straight sets by scores of 6-4, 6-2 on court 4. Down 3-1 in the match, sophomore Daniela Voloh got JMU back within a point, at 3-2, as she took down Elizabet Danailova, 7-6 (6), 6-1 on court three.
Tech clinched the match with a win on court six, but Afanasyeva concluded the match with her second victory of the day at #2 singles. She battled past Kozar 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (5).
UP NEXT
The Dukes return to action on Saturday, Feb. 8 when they travel to University Park, Pa., to take on Penn State. The match is slated for a 10 a.m. start.
