TUCSON, Ariz. – Left-handed pitcher and outfielder
Chase DeLauter of James Madison has been named a
Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American, the organization announced on Tuesday. DeLauter was recognized as an outfielder for his selection.
Â
The Martinsburg, W. Va. native made an immediate impact donning the purple and gold, starting in all 16 games from the leadoff spot. DeLauter lead the team in hitting with a .382 batting average, as well as runs scored (14), hits (26), doubles (seven), and multi-hit games (nine), and finished second in RBI's (14). He ranked in the top six in the Colonial Athletic Association in hits, doubles, runs scored, stolen bases, and batting average.
Â
He began the season on a nine-game hitting streak, including a 3-for-4 performance with three RBI's against then #16 NC State in his second career game. DeLauter also began the season by reaching base safely in the first 15 games, and overall only went hitless in two of James Madison's 16 games. He additionally made four starts on the mound this season, tossing 14.2 innings and striking out 14.
"Chase had a great start to his collegiate career," said head coach
Marlin Ikenberry. "He has worked extremely hard to be a dual threat and this is a great recognition."
Â
DeLauter is the first JMU Freshman All-American since
Collegiate Baseball tabbed
Kevin Kelly and senior
Fox Semones in 2017.
Â
The Dukes were 10-6 and coming off a 4-2 win at Maryland when the season was halted and the remainder of the 2020 season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
