HARRISONBURG, Va. – Nine former James Madison football standouts will begin the 2020 National Football League season on pro rosters, with seven earning spots on 53-man rosters and two more on practice squads.
Â
It's the most JMU players affiliated with NFL franchises to start a season in program history. The Dukes previously had eight active players in 2018 and seven just last year.
Â
JMU's seven players to make a 53-man roster include tight end Daniel Brown (New York Jets), quarterback Ben DiNucci (Dallas Cowboys), safety Raven Greene (Green Bay Packers), safety Dean Marlowe (Buffalo Bills), cornerback Jimmy Moreland (Washington Football Team) and offensive linemen Aaron Stinnie and Josh Wells (both Tampa Bay Buccaneers).
Â
Also earning practice-squad roles were defensive end Ron'Dell Carter (Dallas Cowboys) and wide receiver Ishmael Hyman (Carolina Panthers).
Â
Brown begins his sixth year in the NFL and second with the Jets. Last season, he caught seven passes for 72 yards and a touchdown. Brown has played in 58 career games since 2015, accruing 42 receptions for 389 yards and a pair of scores between his time in Baltimore, Chicago and New York.
Â
DiNucci was drafted in the seventh round and 231st overall pick by the Cowboys back in April. A 2019 AFCA First Team All-American and CAA Player of the Year, he wrapped up his JMU career ranking third all-time in completions (479) fourth in both passing touchdowns (45) and passing yards (5,716) and seventh in total offense (6,718).
Â
Greene is in his third season with the Packers after joining the team following the 2018 draft. He's appeared in 10 career games with one start, making 12 tackles, a sack, a forced fumble and two pass breakups.
Â
Marlowe gets set for his six year in the NFL and fourth in Buffalo. He's spent time both on the 53-man roster and practice squad, but saw his most significant playing time last season, appearing in nine games, making 11 tackles with a pass breakup. In 16 career games between the Bills and Panthers, Marlowe has 16 total tackles and a pair of breakups.
Â
Moreland, a 2019 seventh-round draft pick for Washington, enters his second season as a possible starter in the secondary. Commonly referred to as "The People's Corner" by fans and media, he made five starts in his 14 games as a rookie. Moreland had 41 total tackles with four pass defenses, tallying four games with at least five tackles.
Â
Stinnie enters his third season in the NFL and second with Tampa after joining the Bucs midseason last year following his time with the Tennessee Titans. He appeared in five games last season (3 in Tennessee, 2 in Tampa) and has spent much of this training camp working with the #2 offense.
Â
Wells is the veteran of the NFL Dukes, as he readies for his seventh year in the league. After spending his first five years with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Wells was picked up by Tampa last season, appearing in 13 games for his new team. Since beginning his pro career in 2014, he's seen action in 52 games. He, like Stinnie, also worked a lot into the rotation during training camp.
Â
Carter was signed by Dallas immediately following the 2020 NFL Draft. During his three-year career at JMU, he became one of the program's most effective pass rushers, ranking ninth all-time with 23.5 career sacks. A Consensus FCS First Team All-American as a senior, Carter was runner-up for the 2019 STATS FCS Buck Buchanan Award and was voted Colonial Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Year.
Â
Hyman is in his second season in the NFL after spending time in both Cleveland and Tampa last year. He played in two games for the Bucs, making two receptions for 34 yards. Following the 2019 campaign, he was signed by the Panthers and was very effective in training camp to earn his practice-squad slot.
Â
The NFL kicks off its 2020 season Thursday, Sept. 10 when the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs host the Houston Texans.
Â
