BOSTON, Mass. - Senior guard
Matt Lewis of the James Madison men's basketball team continues to reel in honors and has been named to the 2020-21 Lou Henson Award mid-season watch list, as announced by CollegeInsider.com on Tuesday afternoon.
Â
The Lou Henson National Player of the Year Award, which is presented annually to the top mid-major player in Division I college basketball, honors the former Illinois and New Mexico State head coach who won 775 games in 41 seasons.
Â
Lewis, who was also named the Colonial Athletic Association Preseason Player of the Year and was part of the Lou Henson Preseason Watch List, has played the best basketball of his stellar career through the first two months of his senior campaign, leading the Dukes in scoring (21.3ppg), rebounding (5.0) and assists (3.9).
Â
He is also the league's leading scorer thus far, out-pacing the second-highest average by more than three points while ranking second in field-goal percentage (49.1%), fourth in assists and 15th in rebounding.
Â
Lewis has already written himself into the program record books, scoring 1,829 career points - already third on the Dukes' all-time scoring chart. He also ranks fourth all-time at JMU with 228 career made three-pointers, second all-time with 475 made free throws and ninth in assists at 321.
Â
The Dukes will return home for midweek action this week, welcoming Towson to Harrisonburg on Wednesday, Jan. 27, for a 4 p.m. matchup at the Atlantic Union Bank Center. Since the Dukes topped Towson on its home court, the Tigers have moved to 3-7 (2-3 CAA) on the season, having dropped two games at Hofstra this weekend.
