Seventh Inning Surge Pushes Dukes Past Phoenix

Elon, N.C. – James Madison softball's (10-1, 2-1) seventh inning rally pushes the Dukes past Elon (8-13, 1-2) winning 10-3 on Sunday morning, to wrap up the weekend series.
Kate Gordon recorded a .390 batting average going 2-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI, one run and a walk. Lauren Bernett finished 2-for-4 with a .343 batting average scoring one run and driving in one runner. Lynsey Meeks led JMU with three walks.
Madison Naujokas played a big role in the field for the Dukes recording two putouts and four assists, while adding one hit, one run and two RBI to JMU's offense. Alexis Bermudez (3-1) picked up her third win in the circle throwing one strikeout while recording three assists after pitching 5.0 innings.

The Dukes started the the top of the first cold, coming up short at the plate. Alissa Humphrey started in the circle for JMU striking out three Elon batters but giving up one run in the bottom frame. Â
Elon extended their lead as they pushed two more runs in the bottom of the second off a fielding error by JMU increasing their lead 3-0. The Dukes remained scoreless through the top of the third. Bermudez entered the game in the bottom of the fifth, getting a grounded out on her first pitch for the assist.

The Dukes and the Phoenix stayed scoreless through the next inning. Meeks got the momentum going for JMU drawing a leadoff walk in the top of the fifth, followed by another walk from Kayla Boseman. Bernett hit a single to center and loaded the bases for JMU. Michelle Sullivan drew JMU's third walk of the frame to bring in Meeks on third getting the Dukes on the board.
Hannah Shifflett hit a sacrifice fly out to left field driving in Boseman, to cut Elon's lead to 3-2. Sara Jubas kept the momentum going in the top of the fifth as she hit a single to right center that brought in Hannah Hennessy tying the game up at 3-3.

The teams were scoreless through the next frame and a half until the top of the seventh when JMU's bats got hot. Gordon started the fire with a double to left field. Newton and Jubas each drew walks to load the bases for the Dukes. Naujokas sent the ball to left center for a double to bring in Jubas and Gordon giving JMU a 5-3 lead over Elon. Newton score off a fielding error by Elon to increase the Dukes' lead to 6-3.
Bernett kept the fire alive with a base hit through the left side that allowed Naujokas to score. Hallie Hall recorded a base hit that drove in another run pushing the score to 8-3. Gordon finished the frame with a double to left field  bringing in Boseman and Bernett making the final score 10-3, JMU wins.
