HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison football capped off an unbeaten regular season as the overwhelming #1 team in the Stats Perform FCS Top 25, the organization announced Monday.
The Dukes (5-0) used a strong defensive effort, holding Richmond to 200 total yards, en route to a 23-6 win last Saturday at Bridgeforth Stadium.
JMU garnered 30 of 40 first-place votes to keep the top spot. There was some movement in the top five, as following the Dukes were #2 South Dakota State (5-1), #3 Weber State (5-0), #3 Sam Houston State (6-0) and #5 Delaware (5-0).
In addition to JMU's 30 first-place votes, SDSU tallied seven and Sam Houston added three.
Joining JMU and Delaware in this week's top 25 were three other Colonial Athletic Association teams in #15 Richmond (3-1), #16 Villanova (2-2) and #18 Rhode Island (2-1). Maine also received votes.
#1 JMU opens the postseason on Saturday, April 24 when it hosts #11 VMI in the FCS first round. The game kicks off at 2 p.m. from Bridgeforth Stadium and will be streamed on ESPN3.
