CHARLOTTE, N.C. – James Madison women's tennis was unable to overcome an early deficit, falling 4-1 at #47 Charlotte on Friday afternoon at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex.
Â
The 49ers improved to 17-5 on the year while the Dukes dropped to 8-3.

JMU started off on the right foot, winning the first doubles match for the early advantage. Redshirt sophomore
Daria Afanasyeva and redshirt senior
Alexis Franco beat Kaavya Sawhney and Ruxi Schech by a 6-4 score on court one.
Â
The Dukes were unable to build off that win, as Charlotte would claim the doubles points with a pair of 7-5 wins on courts two and three.
Â
In singles play, the 49ers extended their lead to 3-0 with straight-set victories on courts three and six.
Â
Redshirt sophomore
Kylie Moulin got JMU on the board with a straight-set win on court four. She downed Kaavya Sawhney by scores of 6-4, 6-4 to make it a 3-1 match.
Â
Charlotte answered with a comeback win on court two, clinching the match at 4-1.
Â
Two other matches went unfinished but the Dukes had strong performances from both Afanasyeva and Franco.
Â
Afanasyeva, the reigning Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week, took Schech, the #64 nationally-ranked singles player to the limit, with their match on court one ending at 6-3, 1-6, 5-5. That included a rally in the third, in which Afanasyeva trailed 5-2 before it was stopped.
Â
Franco, who shared CAA Doubles Team of the Week honors with Afanasyeva, won the first set and was mid third with Jenna Dean on court five before it went unfinished at 6-3, 4-6, 2-3.
QUOTING COACH SHELLEY JAUDON
"While this match didn't go our way, we definitely got better from the match experience. Charlotte is a solid team and was able to maintain the effort level point after point to win today. That is something we are working on and getting better at with each match, so I look forward to seeing how we use today's match to be better tomorrow and throughout the remainder of the season."
