Dukes Shut Out Cougars in Sunday Finale

HARRISONBURG, VA – James Madison softball (14-1, 5-1) dominated College of Charleston (4-21, 06) in a 8-0 win, in five innings, to record its first conference series sweep, on Sunday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Park.
Alexis Bermudez (6-1) picked up her sixth win of the season and first combined shutout. She finished the weekend 3-0 against the Cougars tossing one strikeout and keeping Charleston to a .200 batting average in the series finale. Meredith Wells pitched 1.0 inning in the shutout recording her first career strikeout.
Hallie Hall led the Dukes going 2-for-2 at the plate with two doubles adding on three RBI and one run. Lynsey Meeks finished with a .500 batting averaging with one hit, drawing one walk and scoring two runs. Madison Naujokas recorded a double for the Dukes along with two RBI while going 2-for-2 on stolen bases.
How it Happened
Bermudez contributed to all three outs in the first inning, getting the assist on the grounded out, striking out the second batter and catching a pop up to end the frame only allowing one hit. In the bottom of the first, Kate Gordon hit a leadoff single up the middle to get the momentum started for the Dukes. Sara Jubas reached on a fielder's choice as Logan Newton followed with a walk to load the bases. Naujokas hit a double through the gap to drive in two runners giving JMU the 2-0 lead over Charleston.
Meeks keep the fire going in the bottom of the first drawing a walk to reload the passes for the Dukes. On a passed ball, Newton sprinted home to increase JMU's lead to 3-0. Hall hit her first double of the game up the middle for two RBI.

The bases were reloaded for the third time as Michelle Sullivan and Lauren Bernett each drew walks. Gordon was back at the plate and hit a sacrifice fly out to left field to drive in Hall on third to score the final run of the frame. JMU ended the bottom of the first with a 6-0 lead.
JMU went to work again in the bottom of the second as Naujokas drew a walk to get on base. She stole second before Meeks hit a single through the left side to advance her to third. During Hall's at bat, Naujokas made a dash for home plate, recording her second stolen base of the game, pushing JMU to a 7-0 lead over the Cougars. Hall hit a double to left field to drive in Meeks, who had stolen second, home to score the final run for the Dukes.
The teams remained scoreless through the next two and a half innings. JMU kept the Cougars to limited chance forcing them to strand five runners on bases over the course of the game. In top of the fifth, Wells entered the circle for JMU tossing a strikeout to end the game giving JMU the 8-0 victory over Charleston.
