Curt Cignetti announced the program has added a pair of defensive linemen transfers for the 2021 season in
Bryce Carter and
Zaid Hamdan.
Carter comes to JMU after spending four seasons at Towson (2016-19). A 2018 HERO Sports Sophomore All-American, Carter was a two-year starter and a 2019 captain for the Tigers. He appeared in 35 career games with 24 starts on the defensive line. Carter tallied 144 total tackles to go with 34 tackles for loss, 15.0 sacks, six forced fumbles and a recovery. In 2019, he accrued 54 stops with 12.0 TFL and 4.5 sacks. He also logged 52 tackles with 14 for a loss and 6.5 sacks in 2018. His sack totals led the Tigers in each of his final two seasons.
Hamdan joins the Dukes after three seasons at Ohio State (2018-20). He played in five career games for the Buckeyes, appearing twice in 2020 and three times in 2019. He made four tackles in 2019, highlighted by his three stops against Miami (OH). Hamdan was a 2020 Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and a 2019 OSU Scholar-Athlete and Academic All-Big Ten member. He was also part of OSU's teams that advanced to the CFP Playoffs in 2019 and 2020.
Carter will have one season of eligibility for the Dukes, while Hamdan has three seasons left to compete.
