HARRISONBURG, Va. - The James Madison women's soccer team will face off against national and regional powers, including in-state foes Virginia and Virginia Tech, as part of its 2021 schedule announced by Head Coach Joshua Walters, Sr. on Friday.
Â
"We have a fantastic schedule this fall!" said Walters. "There is a great balance of home and away, plus we have some of the best programs in the country coming to Harrisonburg. With this lineup, including the reigning national champion Santa Clara and two of the best ACC teams, we expect a packed and electric atmosphere."
Â
The 2021 edition of the Fairfield by Marriott Invitational will highlight the Dukes' non-conference schedule, as JMU welcomes Santa Clara - fresh off winning the 2020 National Championship this spring - to Harrisonburg as both teams face off against Virginia and Virginia Tech.
Â
The Dukes and Hokies will open the event at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 2, with Santa Clara and Virginia squaring off at 8 p.m. that evening. The weekend will conclude with another double-header on Sunday, Sept. 5, with SCU and Virginia Tech set to kick at noon as JMU and Virginia conclude the event at 3 p.m.
Â
"Games like these are why players come to JMU," Walters said. "We have worked hard to bring Santa Clara, Virginia and Virginia Tech to the Fairfield by Marriott Invitational. It is a great opportunity for fans, alumni and recruits to see some of the best teams in the country at Sentara Park!"
Â
JMU will welcome regional foes to Sentara as well, hosting American (Aug. 22), West Virginia (Sept. 16) and ECU (Sept. 19) to its home field.
Â
To open the season, JMU plays an exhibition match against Marshall, scheduled for 7 p.m. on Aug. 10 at Sentara Park, before opening its regular-season fall slate on the road at VCU on Aug. 19 (7 p.m.). Road trips to Louisville (Aug. 26), Ohio (Aug. 29), UNCG (Sept. 9) and High Point (Sept. 12) are also on tap.
Â
The Dukes will open their Colonial Athletic Association slate with a trip to Drexel on Sept. 26, also hitting the road for league matchups at Northeastern (Oct. 10), Towson (Oct. 14), College of Charleston (Oct. 21) and William & Mary (Oct. 24).
Â
JMU will welcome the reigning CAA regular season champion - Hofstra (Oct. 3) - and the CAA Tournament champion - Elon (Oct. 28) - to Sentara Park, in addition to hosting UNCW (Oct. 17) and capping the regular season against Delaware (Oct. 31), when the Dukes will salute their departing seniors.
Â
The Dukes will return 10 of their 11 starters for the 2021 campaign, including spring All-CAA selections in seniors Ginger Deel and Ebony Wiseman, as well as CAA All-Rookie pick Lexi Vanderlinden.
