HARRISONBURG, Va. – The 2021 summer season has come to a close, as nearly half of the James Madison baseball team participated in summer leagues up and down the East Coast.

Marlin Ikenberry. "It's part of the process. We break our seasons up into three's: fall, spring, and the summers. The summer is a crucial part in the process in becoming a complete baseball player."

Chase DeLauter – Orleans Firebirds (Cape Cod League)
DeLauter had a memorable summer in the Cape as he was named an All-Star and team MVP. He became the first player in JMU history to earn the Robert A. McNeese Outstanding Pro Prospect Award after playing in 34 games while tying for the league lead in home runs (nine) and runs (27). The First Team All-CAA selection tied for third in hits (37) and finished with a .298 batting average and 21 RBI's.

Donovan Burke – Strasburg Express (Valley Baseball League) to Brewster Whitecaps (Cape Cod League)
As the ERA leader in the Valley Baseball League at 2.29, Burke started in seven games and tossed 35.1 innings. He tossed 35 strikeouts and picked up two wins on the way to being named Second Team All-Valley and winning the VBL Championship. Burke then took his talents to the Cape, earning his second title of the summer with the Whitecaps, and earned a spot on the NOVA Baseball Magazine Collegiate Summer All-Star Team.

Nick Stewart – Frederick Keys (MLB Draft League) to Harwich Mariners (Cape Cod League)
Stewart joins Burke and DeLauter in the Cape, the most Dukes in the Cape at once since 2009, after tossing 15 innings in Frederick to a 5.40 ERA. Stewart struck out 17 batters and kept hitters to only a .204 batting average.

Justin Showalter – Princeton WhistlePigs (Appalachian League)
Tied for the fourth most innings tossed with 39, Showalter was named an All-Star and picked up three wins to a 4.38 ERA. He made the most starts in the league (nine) while racking up 37 strikeouts.

Nick Zona – Pulaski River Turtles (Appalachian League)
Zona threw seven innings across four appearances, picking up a win while striking out 11 to help the River Turtles win the East Division Regular Season title.

Sean Culkin – Silver Spring-Takoma T-Bolts (Cal Ripken League)
Culkin appeared in 10 games, throwing 17 innings and striking out 23 batters to six walks. He earned a win and a save.

Sam Landess – South County Braves (Cal Ripken League)
Landess appeared in 11 games, making two starts on his way to being named an All-Star. The lefty tossed 25 strikeouts across 19.2 innings, putting together a 3.66 ERA with one save.

Liam McDonnell – Harrisonburg Turks (Valley Baseball League)
McDonnell went 3-0 during the summer while finishing behind JMU teammate Burke in ERA with a 2.83 during the regular season. He appeared in eight games, making seven starts, while tossing 39 innings and striking out 34 batters. He was named to the NOVA Baseball Magazine Collegiate Summer All-Star Team in the starting rotation.

Joe Vogatsky – Purceville Cannons (Valley Baseball League)
Vogatsky joined Burke on the All-Valley Second Team while also being named an All-Star as he led the league in innings pitched (39.2) and strikeouts (45). He earned two wins to a 3.18 ERA, the sixth lowest in the league. He joins Burke and McDonnell to the NOVA Baseball Magazine Collegiate Summer All-Star Team in the starting rotation.

Matt Kleinfelter – Strasburg Express (Valley Baseball League)
Kleinfelter made seven appearances with three starts as he tossed 22.1 innings. He struck out 17 and picked up a win as he helped Strasburg win their third VBL title.

Callaway Sigler – Staunton Braves (Valley Baseball League)
Sigler hit .179 for Staunton, driving in five runs while also hitting a home run.

Brennan Abbott – Woodstock River Bandits (Valley Baseball League)
Abbott appeared in 13 games, striking out 12 batters across 19.2 innings. He finished the summer with an ERA of 3.66.

Ryan Murphy – Front Royal Cardinals (Valley Baseball League)
Starting in seven games, Murphy made eight appearances and threw the second most innings (35.2) on the Cardinals. He picked up three wins to a 6.30 ERA and struck out 23 batters.

Travis Reifsnider – Harrisonburg Turks (Valley Baseball League)
Reifsnider hit .222 for the Turks across 15 games, while knocking in two runs.

Bryce Safferwich – Harrisonburg Turks (Valley Baseball League)
Safferwich played in 39 games, hitting .198 while driving in 13. The infielder scored 12 runs on his own, including two via a pair of home runs he hit.

Kyle Novak – Upper Valley Nighthawks (New England Collegiate Baseball League)
Novak played in 28 games while hitting at a .258 clip. He scored 14 times while knocking in eight runs and helping the Nighthawks finish second in the Northern Division.

Trevon Dabney – Peninsula Pilots (Coastal Plains League)
Seeing action in 31 games, Dabney hit at a .265 clip and knocked in 15 runs. He finished with 26 hits, including five doubles, one triple, and three home runs while scoring 19 runs.

Mason Dunaway – Peninsula Pilots (Coastal Plains League)
Dunaway finished the summer with a .209 batting average and 22 RBI's. He hit a homer and scored 22 runs.

Lliam Grubbs – Peninsula Pilots (Coastal Plains League)
Grubbs saw action in 10 games, making four starts. He tossed 36 strikeouts to six walks in 31.2 innings and went 3-0 with a 3.41 ERA.

Carmine Poppiti – Peninsula Pilots (Coastal Plains League)
Appearing in 10 games and making three starts, Poppiti tied for the team-lead in wins with four. He finished with a 4-0 record to a 3.03 ERA across 32.2 innings and struck out a team-high 46 batters.

Carson Bell – Tri-City Chili Peppers (Coastal Plains League)
Bell appeared in 20 games and scored seven runs with one RBI.

Andrew Weight – Tri-City Chili Peppers (Coastal Plains League)
Weight made six appearances and earned a win while striking out six.
