BOONE, N.C. – James Madison field hockey fell 2-0 to Appalachian State Friday evening at Erica M. Adcock Field. The 24
th-ranked Dukes dropped to 3-2 on the year while the Mountaineers improved to 2-2.
The Dukes opened the game strong by outshooting App State 6-0 in the first quarter and taking three penalty corners. However, JMU was unable to find the back of the cage.
Following the scoreless opening frame, the Mountaineers took a 1-0 lead when Friederike Stegen scored on App State's second-straight penalty corner.
The Mountaineers scored their second goal six minutes into the third quarter on a breakaway goal by Carli Ciocco to give App State the 2-0 advantage.
Despite the loss, JMU outshot App State 17-5 (8-3 on goal) and held a 7-3 edge in penalty corners.
Eveline Zwager led the Dukes with seven shots, three of them landing on target.
The Mountaineers' goalkeeper Addie Clark stopped all eight of JMU's attempts to record the shutout.
