VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - After multiple schedule adjustment due to inclement weather, the James Madison women's golf team took home a tie for sixth to wrap up play on Sunday at the Evie Odom Invitational, hosted by Old Dominion at the par-70, 5,824-yard Princess Anne Country Club.
Â
The Dukes battled back after a blustery opening round to post back-to-back scores of 282 (+2) in their second and third rounds to close out the weekend just two shots outside of the top five on a strong 15-team leaderboard.
Â
After the tournament started a day early in an effort to avoid inclement weather, the teams were able to complete nearly the entire first round on Thursday afternoon. With heavy rains cancelling all play on Friday, the teams returned to the course on Saturday to finish the first and second rounds before capping the event on Sunday.
Â
Senior
Kate Owens led the way for the Dukes, providing consistency at the top of the lineup with rounds of 70-69-71 (E) to finish in sole possession of seventh among 81 players. The performance marked the second-lowest 54-hole score of her strong career and brings her up to 32 career rounds of par or better, already the JMU program record.
Â
Juniors
Kendall Turner (t-33) and
Amelia Williams (t-37) finished within a shot of each other - Turner improved each round, carding 75-73-70 to wrap the weekend at 218 (+8), while Williams (76-71-72) was just behind at 219 (+9).
Â
Maria Atwood (74-77-69) tied for 46th as she continued her strong freshman season, leading the Dukes on the final day with a 69 (-1) that matched her low collegiate round to par, while junior
Haley Quickel (81-69-74) closed out the JMU scoring in a tie for 58th.
