GREENVILLE, Va. - Sophomore
Daniel Cheng captured the first medalist honors of his college career and James Madison men's golf captured a tie for second on Sunday afternoon to close out the Furman Intercollegiate, hosted at the par-71, 7,005-yard Furman University Golf Course.
Cheng posted a new college low for 54 holes and matched his lowest collegiate round on the week, carding rounds of 68-66-70 to tie for first place at 204 (-9), two shots clear of third place. Cheng led the entire 84-player field in birdies with 16 across three rounds. His performance marks the first individual medalist for JMU since
Walker Cress took home the title at the River Run Collegiate on Sept. 24, 2019.
As a team, the Dukes were near the top of the leaderboard throughout the event, posting rounds of 280-287-285 to tie for second among 15 teams alongside Davidson, four shots ahead of No. 49 Furman on its home course.
Freshman
Owen Kose capped his first fall at JMU in style, picking up another top-20 finish with a 70-75-69 (+1) week that saw him tie for 16th and pick up his seventh and eighth round of par or better in just 15 opportunities.
In his first tournament in the starting lineup, freshman
Suneil Peruvemba was the model of consistency, carding 73-73-73 (+6) to tie for 32nd, while sophomore
Kyle Kushnir tied for 59th with a 69-82-73 (+11) week. Senior
Nick Schlickenrieder capped the JMU scoring in a tie for 70th (76-73-79, +15).
UP NEXT
The Dukes have closed out the fall portion of their 2022-23 campaign, picking up a victory and a second-place finish along the way. JMU will open its spring season on March 12-14, traveling to the famed Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Oregon to take part in the Bandon Dunes Championship.
