HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison rattled off 44 unanswered points and dominated #23 Coastal Carolina, 47-7, to finish atop the Sun Belt Conference East division standings on Saturday afternoon at Bridgeforth Stadium.

The Dukes conclude their inaugural FBS season with an 8-3 overall record and 6-2 mark in Sun Belt Conference play, while the Chanticleers fell to 9-2 and 6-2.

JMU trailed 7-3 into the second quarter, but reeled off 44 consecutive points in a span of 29:03 while holding Coastal to just 80 total yards over the final three quarters.

Todd Centeio combined for five touchdowns and 312 total yards in his final collegiate game, throwing 17-of-32 for 287 yards and four touchdowns while adding 25 rushing yards and a score on the ground.

Devin Ravenel saved his best for last on Senior Day, making five receptions for 102 receiving yards and two touchdowns for his first career 100-yard game. Kris Thornton made a game-high six catches for 93 yards, as he became JMU's first two-time 1,000-yard receiver. Reggie Brown returned this week, going for 55 receiving yards and a touchdown on a pair of grabs, while Drew Painter scored on a 15-yard catch in his final game.

JMU rushed for 215 yards, led by Percy Agyei-Obese's 79 rushing yards on just seven carries (11.3 avg.). Agyei-Obese finished his career ranking third with 3,503 rushing yards. Latrele Palmer had a big second half, accruing 61 rushing yards and a score, while Kaelon Black added 50.

JMU's defense held Coastal to only 183 yards and 2.8 yards per play. The JMU defense was paced by Jailin Walker, who had a game- and career-high 10 tackles. Chris Chukwuneke also turned in career numbers, tallying eight tackles with 2.5 tackles for loss, a sack and a fumble recovery. Taurus Jones also finished with eight stops. James Carpenter made six tackles with a sack, while Jamare Edwards capped off his career with five tackles, 3.5 TFL and a pair of sacks.

HOW IT HAPPENED

JMU took advantage of a short field off a short punt and drove into the red zone, where Camden Wise drilled his 10th field goal of the year from 32 yards out to give the Dukes 3-0 lead early.
Coastal got on the board with 4:50 left in the first, as it converted a fourth down with a 33-yard touchdown pass from Jarrett Guest to Tyson Mobley to give the visitors a 7-3 lead.
After Wise knocked down his second field goal from 43 yards out, the Dukes took a 13-7 lead. Centeio connected over the middle to Brown, who sprinted 34 yards to the house for his fourth touchdown reception of the season.
JMU went to the air with multiple big plays to set up a 26-yard touchdown pass from Centeio to Ravenel to give JMU a 20-7 halftime lead.
The Dukes found the end zone three times in the third to blow the game wide open. Centeio found Painter in the corner of the end zone on a 17-yard touchdown to make it 26-7. The next drive, Palmer ran it in from 13 yards out, followed by Ravenel scoring for the second time on a pass over the middle to extend the lead to 40-7.
The 2022 season's scoring was capped off with 12:55 to play when Centeio rushed it in from 11 yards out, running over a defender at the goal line.

GAME NOTES

JMU held a wide margin in total offense, at 502-183. That included 287-93 in the pass game. JMU averaged 7.6 per play on offense.
Coastal out-gained JMU 103-75 in the first quarter, but the Dukes had a 427-80 lead in yards over the final three quarters.
JMU was 6-for-6 in the red zone, while Coastal failed to reach the red area one time.
JMU had five sacks, as opposed to Coastal's one.
The Dukes forced two turnovers with a Jalen Green interception and a Chukwuneke fumble recovery. JMU did not turn over the ball once and had zero fumbles on the day.
JMU handed Coastal its biggest loss since a 48-7 defeat to Louisiana on Nov. 7, 2019.
The Dukes also snapped CCU's five-game road win streak, which was tied for third in the FBS.
For the Chanticleers, Guest finished with 99 passing yards with a touchdown and interception. No rusher gained more than 30 yards, as Reese White had a team-best 29.
JMU put up at least 40 points for the sixth time in 2022, going 6-0 this season in those games. It also held the opposition to single-digit points for the fourth time, also winning in all four instances.
Saturday's win was JMU's largest of the season against a FBS team and its first home win over a AP Top 25 ranked team.
