Dukes Fall in Heartbreaker to Old Dominion in Sun Belt Championship

FOLEY, Ala. – James Madison saw itself in two-goal holes at two separate times in the Sun Belt Conference women's soccer championship, but tied the match and forced overtime before allowing an Old Dominion goal in the 106th minute to fall, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon at the Foley Sports Tourism Complex.

The Dukes' season comes to an end at 12-4-5 while the Monarchs move to 9-8-3 and earn the league's automatic qualifier into the NCAA tournament.

Sophomores Amanda Attanasi and Sophia Verrecchia both took three shots to lead the Dukes on the offensive side of the ball, while redshirt junior Alexandra Blom made six saves in goal.

How It Happened
- It only took 38 seconds to put a goal on the board, as ODU's Carla Morich knocked in a goal after it rolled away from Blom.
- Megan Watts scored in the 12th minute on a rip from the right side of the box to the far lower corner to put the Monarchs up 2-0.
- JMU got a goal back in the 43rd minute on a penalty kick from graduate student Hannah Young to make the score 2-1.
- Old Dominion made it a two-score match once again in the 47th minute, netting a goal from Morich.
- It only took one minute and 20 seconds for the Dukes to respond, as Young sent a through ball to Attanasi who beat the ODU keeper to the ball and put it in the back of the net.
- Verrecchia scored the equalizer on the second penalty kick of the match, making it 3-3 in the 58th minute.
- The match remained tied, heading into overtime. The first overtime saw both teams only taking one shot, with no score change.
- The Monarchs netted the game-winner in the second overtime, as Morich completed the hat trick with just over four minutes left in the match.
Game Notes
- ODU took 15 shots compared to JMU's 12.
- The four goals given up by the Dukes are the most this season and only the second time the Dukes have given up more than two goals.
- Attanasi's nine goals this season are the most since Haley Crawford scored nine in 2018.
- Attanasi, senior Lidia Nduka, redshirt junior Suwaibatu Mohammed and freshman Soleil Flores were all named to the All-Tournament Team.
